Several times during the 2016 campaign, President Trump asked African-Americans, What do you have to lose?”
This week Trump released his budget and we African-Americans have a great deal to lose. We make up 20% of the federal government workers and this budget calls for more than 200,000 workers to lose their occupations. Now if there is already documentation validating disparity in hiring and promotions of Blacks, you know who's getting fired first.
Trump plans to eliminate the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) the only federal agency established solely to create jobs through the growth and global competitiveness of minority-owned concerns in the United States. Over the past few years, I have worked with the US Black Chambers and the MBDA to help grow from 1.5 million black entrepreneurs to 2.5 million during the Obama government.
Trump plans to get rid of the US African Development Foundation (USADF) an independent US government agency established to support and invest in African-owned and led enterprises which improve lives and livelihoods in poor and vulnerable African communities. Over the past four years, I have worked with the Obama government in helping more than 25 countries in Africa.
Trump plans to do away with more than 60 named agencies and many other unnamed agencies. This is going to cause a huge impact on African-American veterans and the black middle class.
All of these cuts for educational purposes will have a direct impact on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) which means that black engineering, nursing, and IT programs, etc. are going to take a substantial amount of damage too.
In all the Department of Education is taking a $10 billion cut within an institution that can’t afford such a big loss.
The bottom line is that we have a great deal to lose. It's going to be critical that our generation does our best to engage the US House of Representatives and the Senate.
This is not the time to get on with life in a working and escape mode filled with entertainment.
Remember in our current state of Black wealth it would take over 230 years just to be equivalent to wealth white's enjoy today.
