SAN ANTONIO (August 30, 2019) — Today, the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association Local 624 announced the selection of the Hon. John J. Specia, Jr., to serve as the third member of the arbitration panel. The panel will issue a ruling on the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Judge Specia retired from the 225th District Court in December of 2006 after serving the court for nearly 20 years. Judge Specia is a partner in the law firm of Plunkett, Griesenbeck & Mimari, Inc., and he specializes in the areas of mediation, arbitration and private judging.

“San Antonio’s firefighters are eager to present their case to Judge Specia and the rest of the arbitration panel,” stated Ricky J. Poole, General Counsel for Local 624.  “Judge Specia’s impressive credentials speak for themselves, and we are confident that upon review of the evidence, the panel will deliver a decision that addresses the significant economic and health-related issues so important to firefighters while maintaining the strong financial position of the City.”

Next Steps:

The arbitration will take place in early December and is expected to last approximately two weeks. The panel may request post-hearing briefs. Once the arbitration is closed, the panel will reach a decision which will establish a new binding collective bargaining agreement.
