WWE Royal Rumble will return to San Antonio's Alamodome for the first time in 20 years in January, WWE confirmed Friday.
The event will be held Jan. 29, sources confirmed. The last time the show came to that San Antonio venue, in 1997, a title bout between Shawn Michaels and Sycho Sid brought more than 60,000 fans into the Alamodome.
Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. WWE superstars expected to compete include: John Cena, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, A.J. Styles, Randy Orton and Kevin Owens.
WWE Royal Rumble, heralded as one of the organization's biggest events and the official start of the Road to Wrestlemania, was a success the last time it came to the Alamo City.
When San Antonio's own "Heartbreak Kid" headlined the 1997 fight, he regained the WWF title after defeating Sycho Sid. Stone Cold Steve Austin, who now lives in South Texas, went on to be the last man standing in the Royal Rumble, which featured Mil Mascaras, Canek and others.
The winner of Royal Rumble typically receives a title opportunity at Wrestlemania, which will be held in Orlando on April 2, 2017.
Longtime WWE star Triple H won the 30-Superstar rumble in 2016, hosted in Florida.
