SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 7, 2016)—VIA Metropolitan Transit has partnered with the San Antonio Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival to provide convenient travel options for festival attendees, estimated to number in the thousands. VIA will extend service for VIVA centro (Route 301) to the event grounds and operate longer hours on Friday, November 11, to accommodate events at The Carver Community Cultural Center, and the Dignowity and Lockwood parks, where attendees can enjoy pop-up exhibitions, multi-media works, and a variety of performances.
On all other festival dates (November 9, 10, and 12), Luminaria attendees can travel to and from the event using regular line service Route 22 (Nolan/Hays). A detailed map and regular schedule is available at VIAinfo.net.
“Public transportation and public art both transport people in meaningful ways. VIA and Luminaria help to make these connections for our community,” said VIA President/CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt. “We are proud to support Luminaria in this unique celebration of art, light, and movement.”
For Friday’s Luminaria events, VIVA centro will operate on an extended route from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., to connect festivalgoers with planned art, music, and dance performances. Regular line service fares will apply, and all valid e-fare media will be accepted. The best value is with a VIA Day Pass that provides unlimited rides on the day of purchase for just $2.75. Passes can be purchased in advance or on the bus.
The VIVA centro eastbound route will detour from Montana and IH-37/281 North access road and continue on Montana, Hackberry, Lamar, Cherry, Cesar Chavez, IH-37/281-North access road, Gonzales, and on to the regular route. Westbound trips will follow the regular route from St. Paul Square. The extension of VIVA centro will also serve the Alamodome Parking Lot C at Cherry and Montana streets. Luminaria visitors can park there to board the route for the November 11 events.
VIA’s new VIVA service line offers three distinct routes—VIVA culture, VIVA missions, and VIVA centro —to connect riders with historic places, classic and contemporary art, popular dining and entertainment spots, and opportunities to learn and discover in the heart of San Antonio.
