Suspect in Texas officer's death got married after shooting

November 30, 2016

Otis Tyrone McKane was at the Bexar County Courthouse even as a manhunt for him was underway.

The man told investigators that he recognized McKane as a customer to whom he had sold rims and tires several weeks ago for a black Mitsubishi Galant, the auto that police said the suspect was driving, the affidavit said.

The video shows the couple arriving and going through the metal detectors. Police also were looking for a black Mitsubishi Galant with chrome rims and tinted windows. It was registered to McKane. The witness immediately picked out the suspect from the picture, the affidavit said.

In a 2014 News4SanAntonio story about the demolition of the Eastside's Wheatly Courts projects, McKane talked about growing up around violence on San Antonio's Eastside, saying he remembered "sleeping and waking up to gun shots when I was a little child". Police used a photo from his driver's license, the Express-News reported.

After tracking him for hours, police arrested McKane at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday in a white Buick and charged him with capital murder. "It's a relief for a lot of us". The detective was shot as he sat in his squad vehicle Sunday after making a traffic stop. He told reporters he was angry about a child-custody fight and "lashed out at somebody who didn't deserve it".

To the family of the slain officer, McKane said he was "sorry". Benjamin Marconi, 50, was shot and killed November 20, 2016.

A Texas man facing charges for allegedly ambushing and killing a San Antonio cop reportedly got married Monday, just hours before his arrest in the case, NBC News reports. He walked around the block and climbed inside the black Mitsubishi with the chrome rims.

Deputy Commander Carothers and Detective Marconi are the 59th and 60law enforcement officers to be killed this year in a fire-arms related death in the line of duty, respectively, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Authorities have said a gunman walked up to Marconi's driver's-side window and fired.

Close to the same spot where the police officer was killed Sunday morning, dozens of people, including city leaders marched from Milam Park to Public Safety Headquarters.

McKane was arrested Monday afternoon, hours after he married 27-year-old San Antonio resident Christian Chanel Fields. "He supported that wholeheartedly". "He embodied that", Salcido said.
