SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 6, 2016) — After a national search, City Manager Sheryl Sculley announced today the appointment of Lieutenant General Russell “Russ” J. Handy as the City’s Aviation Director. Lt. Gen. Handy retired from the Air Force on October 1, 2016 and has more than 20 years of senior executive experience of military and civil aerospace operations.
Prior to his retirement, Lt. Gen. Handy served as Commander of the Alaskan Region of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Commander of Alaskan Command and Commander of the Eleventh Air Force where he directed operations to ensure effective monitoring and defense of the region’s airspace.
Lt. Gen. Handy is a command pilot, primarily in the F-15 and F-22A, and has participated in numerous combat operations and deployments. He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science, and obtained a Master of Science in Administrative Management from Central Michigan University.
“I am confident in Lt. Gen. Handy’s ability to lead the San Antonio International Airport forward,” City Manager Sheryl Sculley said. “Russ’s expertise in the areas of leading operations, strategic planning and supervising North America’s most significant Pacific transit point will be a tremendous asset to the department and the City of San Antonio.”
Lt. Gen. Handy’s appointment at the Airport will begin January 9, 2017.
