Eastside Coalition Works to Bridge Gap Between Teenagers and Local Law Enforcement
(San Antonio, TX – March 18, 2017) – San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. (SAFB) in partnership with CVS Health will host their 2nd Annual Teen Empowerment Summit on Saturday March 18, 2017 at Second Baptist Community Church.
The purpose of this summit is to educate, empower and engage our youth to become leaders within their community. This year’s intended focus is bridging the gap between the young community members and various law enforcement agencies. “It is all about
creating long-lasting, impactful relationships,” said Willie Mitchell, Executive Director of SAFB. The doors are scheduled to open at 11:00 AM sharp for early registration, with the first 50 kids to receive door prizes. Along with numerous vendors to provide available resources to the teens, there will be plenty of food, games, a talent/fashion show, and a 3 on 3-basketball tournament for all attendees
However, before the fun, a panel discussion will be held at noon to discuss substance abuse as it relates to crime amongst youth, primarily speaking on prescription, marijuana and synthetic drug use and abuse. The dynamic panel will consist of various law enforcement agencies, a local attorney, a pharmacist, a retired Federal Prison Guard, and a formerly incarnated advocate. The goal is to educate parents and youth while working to reduce substance abuse in youth and decrease the numbers of kids that are part of the school to prison pipeline. “If we are only reactive, and not proactive in addressing these systematic issues plaguing our youth, we are allowing the cycle of drugs and violence to continue to detour our teenagers from becoming the future leaders that they are destined to be,” said Damika Burton, Program Coordinator of Drug Free Communities. With well over 300 in attendance last year, we are anticipating to exceed that number because of our partnerships, extensive outreach and promotions targeting nearby schools.
