Proof that the Civil War was about Slavery

It will take years to undo the destruction of society by racists in America, and it will require that we reconstruct our society as well, When Texas decided as a state to leave the Union of the United States in 1861 it was obvious that the reason for this decision was slavery. In fact, slavery was the reason for the entire Civil War and was the central problem. The slave owners wanted the freedom to maintain their system of slavery. Even though Abraham Lincoln would not be perfect in his understanding of slavery and the complete need to end it, his election in 1860 was a principle reason why Texas decided to leave the Union in favor of a white racist movement by the plantation owners to maintain the institution of slavery. One need only read the historical secession document that was penned by some of the most insane bigots in American history.

In case you run into a modern historical looney that claims that the Civil War was not about slavery refer them to the articles that were written during that time. Simply Google “The Texas Articles of  Secession” which reads in part: “We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regard as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable. That in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator as recognized by all Christian nations; while the destruction of the existing relations between the two races, as advocated by our sectional enemies, would bring inevitable calamities upon both and dissolution upon the fifteen slave-holding States.” These are their own words that their modern supporters now deny! This was written in Texas and was not that much different from the statements in all of the other southern states in their reasons for leaving the union. It was SLAVERY!

These words, and the words of the confederate regimes in the South basically said the same thing; that whites are superior, that America, and the rest of the plantation owner South, was started for the “white race” only, that slavery of blacks was beneficial, and that God Himself sanctioned their white supremacy! This lunacy is repeated in the guise of celebrating all sorts of Civil War events by modern-day people that are still brainwashed by the ideas of “Lost Cause” propaganda. The confederate sympathizers that erected statues and monuments did so to create a false history about the reasons for the Civil War. It was not about a northern invasion, but about protecting plantation owners and cotton production using slaves to do so. The “Lost Cause” propaganda refuses to recognize the “southern Yankees” that fought against the Confederacy, and the fact that many whites refused to fight for the slave owners and deserted the confederate army in every state in the South by the thousands. Many whites claimed it was a war to protect the rich slave owners and poor whites had to pay the price.

In attempting to deal with the south’s defeat and the end of slavery, southern racists created a cult of the “Lost Cause,”which was done by erecting statues and spreading fake history.According to ABC News reports, “A whole generation of Southerners set about glorifying and celebrating it . . . The Cult of the Lost Cause emerged at the end of the Civil War when the Confederacy had lost. The movement is made up of those who haven’t accepted the outcome of the war 152 years later.”

The Confederate troops that fought to defend slavery were the victims of lies or forced to fight at gun-point by confederate authorities. Those that claim the Civil War was not about slavery have accepted the ideas of the cult of the “Lost cause.” The rebel flag represents the ideas of white supremacy, as does that statue in Travis Park. It is not about “Southern Heritage” unless one means the horrors of slavery to go along with it! The “Southern Heritage” argument is propaganda at its worst. No one should celebrate the soldiers that fought and died for such unjust reasons. All soldiers fight out of courage or fear, but to fight for slavery and racism is quite another matter.
