It was brought to our attention the needle of progress is moving in MLK Park. Community activist Otis Thompson wanted the Observer to update the community on the progress that is being made. The good news is there is new playground equipment at MLK Park. It was a result of a direct partnership between the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department and USAA Foundation. Director of the Park & Recreation, Xavier D. Urrutia said, "USAA has been a great partner in providing funding and manpower (USAA volunteers) to do an annual playground build and they selected MLK Park this year. We owe the USAA Foundation a debt of gratitude for their commitment to improving our parks in our community."
If you are also wondering, I suspect USAA was the largest participant in the 2018 MLK March. The company seemed like they had employees and family members stretching for MILES... They kept going and going and going. It was quite impressive to see.
"As a USAA member since 1991, I was very proud to see the participation of our bank. USAA has been been involved with supporting the East Side of San Antonio on select projects they value. For instance, USAA also serves on the Board of Directors of the Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce (Herry Stallings) and now this community feature in the heart of the East Side will benefit so many families", said Christopher Herring, Chairman of the Texas Association of African American Chambers of Commerce.
He adds, "The Big winner in all of this...the East Side community. Dr. King would be thankful"
Thank-you to USAA and the USAA Foundation for leaving the community better than it was in 2017!
