HISTORIC HALL OF FAME EVENING AT SPC: ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE SPRING COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY INCLUDES TWO WOMEN’S HALL OF FAMERS, GRADUATION PRESENTS FOR EACH STUDENT FROM HALL OF FAMER RENÉE FLORES
SAN ANTONIO (May 14, 2018)---When AT&T regional vice president, external and legislative affairs Renée Flores delivered the commencement speech for the St. Philip's College Spring 2018 commencement ceremony May 11 in Freeman Coliseum, her meticulous preparation for the event included group advice, an unprecedented-in-college history individual present for each student, and an ultra-special magic in the air.
Before the 2016 past Chairman of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and 2017 San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame inductee reached the podium to speak, graduating students from the 120-year-old college didn’t know they were making college history when they were addressed by two hall of famers---Flores and event co-host St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston, who introduced Flores for the occasion.
The magic in the air consisted of words from both hall of famers---and that graduation gift---streamers launched by students on a cue from the hall of famers and Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie, who stood on the stage facing the packed house.
Tracy Shelton is the college’s associate director of records and registration.
“The icing on the cake was the party streamers–-the students had so much fun with them,” Shelton said. “The party streamers were compliments of the commencement speaker, Ms. Renee Flores,” said Shelton.
The AT&T Foundation's September 2016 visit to St. Philip's College to ceremonially provide Alamo Colleges District with the first corporate funding to support any of its early college high school operations included Flores as a key visit member---coincidentally during her chamber chair tenure and a few months before her March 2017 induction in the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame. When the hall of famer returned to the college, she didn’t have to look far to see the San Antonio Independent School District students who benefitted from that funding. St. Philip’s College Early College High School with San Antonio Independent School District students had a front row seat to witness the hall of famer in good words and deeds and once again.
