Another summer has come and gone and all across our state school children are getting ready for another exciting year of learning. This month I participated in three back to school events to help ensure that school children in Texas House District 120 were ready for the upcoming year.
I hosted my own Back to School backpack giveaway event in association with Communities in Schools, San Antonio. I would like to thank Comerica Bank, which was kind enough to contribute towards purchasing school supplies for school children in need and to allow us to use their bank lobby. I would also like to thank University Health Systems who attended the event to help anyone interested in signing up for healthcare and understanding their benefits. Communities in Schools identified a number of families in need ahead of the event and we invited those families to come to pick up school supplies. Thanks to our corporate sponsors including Comerica, H-E-B, and Walmart we were able to distribute one hundred backpacks to help ensure a successful school year.
Another Back to School event I participated in was the CentroMed “Back to School Festival” at the Noemí Galván Eling Clinic. The festival was a major event with rides, face painting, prizes, and free school supplies for children ages 5 to 15. I enjoyed sponsoring the event along with Rackspace, the San Antonio Food Bank, and the YMCA. Thanks to our corporate sponsors we helped to supply many children from the community with much needed school supplies.
Finally, I happily helped to sponsor and spoke at the New Christian Fellowship’s 3rd annual Back to School “PREP” Rally for children from the broader San Antonio Community. The event was a tremendous success and helped provide free school supplies, backpacks, immunizations, dental screenings, and haircuts to hundreds of students from Elementary to High School. The event also received wide support from the community, including Councilman Perry, Commissioner Calvert, the San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department, and many many others. I enjoyed being part of such an important event.
Overall it has been a very eventful August. Thanks to these events and to their sponsors many children across San Antonio are now better prepared to succeed in the upcoming school year. I would like to once again thank all of the sponsors who made these events possible, all of the people who worked so hard to plan the events, and all of the parents and families who attended. I hope you all have an exciting, educational, and rewarding new school year!
