SAISD to create second all-girls school

YWLA Primary at Page to open August 2019

San Antonio ISD has announced plans to establish a second all-girls school. SAISD will open a school for primary grades in August of 2019, starting with Kinder and first. The school will add a grade each year, ultimately becoming K-5.

YWLA Primary at Page will be open to all girls who live within Bexar County, with priority to those living within the Page Middle School boundaries. There are no academic entry requirements and admission is based on a lottery system.

The school will have a strong focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) curriculum, along with social-emotional learning, and early college preparation.

YWLA Primary will be overseen by Delia McLerran, current principal at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy for grades 6-12.

Devyn, a junior at YWLA, said that she is excited to help young people grow, and help guide the next generation of female leaders.

“The best part about YWLA is the bond you build with your sisters,” she said. “I think a school like this would have helped me a lot in elementary school. I was super shy and didn’t raise my hand in class even though I knew the answers. I feel if girls start early in this type of setting they will be able to grow and be outspoken when they are older.”

The application period for the first cohort of students will begin on Nov. 26, 2018, and the first of several open house dates will be held on October 16 at 6 p.m. at Page Middle School, located at 401 Berkshire Ave.
