VIA Invites Contestants to Enter 2019 “VIA GoCodeSA Codeathon”
Last year’s winner’s entry, VIA Quick Trip, now available on Apple app store
SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 28, 2019) -- The VIA Quick Trips app, last year’s winning project in the VIA Metropolitan Transit's GoCodeSA Codeathon, is now available from the Apple app store. The travel tool app allows users to search for nearby food, drinks, and attractions and provides transit directions to the resulting locations. It is an excellent guide for discovering new places in the city or helping settle the age-old problem of trying to decide where to go for lunch.
The VIA Quick Trips app takes a different approach to using transit. Rather than using your typical day-to-day route, it allows users to explore areas of the city and gives them the confidence to use transit because it plans the trip and provides step-by-step instructions to locations that are easily accessible by transit.
The VIA Quick Trips app was the winning project from the 2018 Codeathon that has been modified to be a very basic working app with the intent of releasing the code back to 2019 Codeathon participants, so they may enhance it and make it more widely available, given the app currently is only available to iPhone users. VIA works diligently to integrate the products of Codeathon into the agency's overall product line.
The VIA GoCodeSA Codeathon is an event designed to bring together the best coders, designers, and tech experts in the area, and challenge them to turn bright transit ideas into potential transit innovation for our region. Teams compete for cash prizes.
There will be a Codeathon Mixer with the VIA team and fellow Codeathon participants on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Dorćol Distilling + Brewing Co. There will be prizes, free appetizers and refreshments. The 3rd Annual GoCodeSA Codeathon is from Feb. 22-24, 2019, at Trinity University’s Center for the Sciences and Innovation (CSI), West Campus Lane, in San Antonio. The Codeathon registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, and is limited to the first 175 registrants. Online registration is available at gocodesa.com.
Codeathon is free for participants, who will be eligible for cash prizes based on their work. Applicants must register as a group, each composed of at least two, and at most, five individuals, age 18 and older. The Codeathon judges will conduct reviews and select the top entries in 12 categories.
Codeathon teams can work on any type of project (web apps, mobile apps, wearable solutions, data visualizations, algorithms, or visual mock-ups, for example). Challenges are posted to GoCodeSA.com/challenges and will focus on public transportation. Participants can choose to work on a provided challenge, but are not limited to them. Projects will be judged on impact, innovation, and technical achievement.
