If you haven't stocked up on back-to-school supplies, you might want to hold off a few days. The upcoming tax-free weekend will enable purchases that will save some $8 for every $100 spent on qualifying items.
We know, it doesn't sound like much. But every penny counts, right? From Aug. 9-11, consumers will be able to purchase clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies without tax. And yet, there are exceptions to this tax-less, bargain bonanza: Any individual item priced more than $100 will not be tax-exempt, and other items — handbags, jewelry, umbrellas and wallets — also don't apply. Also not tax-free are such items as briefcases, gym bags, luggage and the like.
