The spurs opened the 2019-2020 preseason with a 125-89 loss to the Orlando Magic. The loss marked the return of Dejounte Murray who returns this season from an ACL injury he suffered in last years preseason. The loss also featured the return of Tim Duncan to the spurs bench as an assistant coach. Murray who was slated to be a major contributor for the spurs last season, played 15 minutes and had 11 points. Spurs guard Bryn Forbes led all scorers with a game high 24 points in 23 minutes on 9 out of 13 shooting.
Forbes was also an efficient 5 out of 6 from behind the 3 point line.
Although lacking a marquee star, the spurs appear ready to continue their league leading playoff appearance streak. As a result of a myriad of injuries to several key players and the uncertainty of Kawhi Leonard’s future, which led to the acquisition of Demar DeRozan from Toronto; the spurs finished the the 2018-19 season in 7th place in the highly competitive Western Conference. The season was culminated with a first round playoff exit in 7 games to the Denver Nuggets. The team looks to make a much deeper playoff push this season and will lean on a core of young players like 2nd year player Lonnie Walker IV who had a strong showing this summer in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas. Coupled with veterans like Demar DeRozan, Lamarcus Aldridge, and Rudy Gay; the Spurs should be contenders in the Western Conference.
