Monday, November 11 marked the permanent return of Former Spurs guard and 4x NBA champion Tony Parker to the AT&T Center. Parker; who played for the Spurs for 17 seasons after they selected him with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft, had his #9 jersey retired following Monday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Tony Parker; a member of the “Big 3”, alongside Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli, was an integral piece of San Antonio’s last four championship teams (‘03, ‘05, ‘07, ‘14). Parker joins the aforementioned Duncan and Ginobli, as well as James Silas, George Gervin, Johnny Moore, David Robinson, Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson and Bruce Bowen as the only Spurs players to have their jerseys retired.
The night was marred as the Spurs dropped their second straight home game and third home loss of the season to the 3-7 Memphis Grizzlies 113-109. The loss follows Saturday’s home drubbing to the Boston Celtics 135-115.
The Spurs have given up 108 points in the paint over the last two games; 60 points to the Celtics and 48 to the Grizzlies. Couple that with inconsistent play from veterans Lamarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan and you have the makings of a disastrous season. Aldridge had 3 points against the Celts and 19 (7 points in the 2nd half) in Monday’s loss to the Grizzlies. DeRozan put in 23 points against Boston and a mere 12 points (2 points in the 2nd half) in the loss to the Grizz. Memphis forward Jaren Jackson Jr. led all scorers with 24 points and added 6 rebounds. Grizzlies big man Jonas Valanciunas chipped in 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Defense has always been a staple of a Coach Popovich coached team so it’s worth mentioning that the Spurs are currently 21st in the league in opponents points per game.
The Spurs look to rebound from Monday’s loss on Wednesday November 13, as they face the Minnesota Timberwolves (6-4) in Minnesota as they embark on a 2 game road trip.
