Fabulous and Beautiful, Celebrating 100 Years

Cecile L. Ray celebrated her 100th birthday at an impressive party given by her family at the Windcrest Civic Center.

A native of San Antonio, she was born on December 5, 1919 (ten years before the United States Depression).  She has lived 36,500 days and has achieved many accomplishments in her 100 years.

Her party was a complete surprise to her, she thought she was just going to a social function with her granddaughter.

Over 150 guests attended the event, to include family, friends, and church members.  Sher arrived in a “white limousine” and entered the party to the tune of “God Made You Special” by Denice Williams.

Mrs. Ray was given the nickname “Dearie” that was displayed on a large banner at the event.  “Dearie” was married to Algy Ray for over 65 years before he passed.  She spent her adult life as a seamstress and milliner, making clothes and hats for different people, as well as church uniforms and choir robes.

Mrs. Ray was presented a City of San Antonio plaque, and six plaques were presented by her granddaughter, Judge Melodee Armstrong of Dallas, Texas.  The six plaques were from: President Bill Clinton, Gov. Abbott, Senators Cornyn, Cruz, Doggett, Menendez and State Rep. Roland Gutierrez.

She is the matriarch of six (6) generations still living today.  She has many grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren.

Dearie and mother of her daughter-in-law (Mrs. Johnnie Griffin) helped to originate the Griffin/Ray Scholarship Fund in 2004 giving scholarships to students at Sam Houston High School for the last 15 years.  She has been an active member of Mt. Zion First Baptist Church (Rev. Otis Mitchell is Pastor) since she was a child.  She was recently honored as one of the church’s oldest members.

She was the oldest child born to her parents, Clifford and Henrietta Forney.  She has one living sibling (Lilly Stone) who is the youngest born, now residing in Jackson, Michigan.

Her children are Charles Ray (wife Rubye), Barbara (Ray) Jackson (Deceased), Algereida (Ray) Cherry (Deceased) and Beverly (Ray) Armstrong (Deceased).
