Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 provides Free Lunches over Memorial Day Weekend
SAN ANTONIO – As the American Legion prepared to honor those brave men and women who have died serving in our U.S. Armed Forces, and in honor of military, veterans, first responders, healthcare personnel, and the community-at-large, Fred Brock American Legion Post No. 828 provided free fish fry lunches at the post, May 23.
According to Post Commander Al Alford, the post is a staple on the city’s East Side and the legionnaires wanted to do something for all in the community.
“We provided over 200 meals consisting of fried fish and fries to our guests,” said Alford, a past District 20 commander and the current Texas Department historian. “For everyone’s safety, guests were required to drive into our parking lot and our volunteers would provide them with a meal, a choice of soda or water, and if they were a veteran, they received a miniature U.S. Flag.”
For one veteran, receiving a meal and being around fellow veterans was the highlight of his day.
“This was a great event,” said Daniel Simmons, who served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during Vietnam. “We not only served in defense of our country, but we can serve our local community as well.”
Alford thanked all the volunteers of the post who took time out of their schedules to come forward and be a part of preparing and distributing the meals.
“I hope that we will have another opportunity in the future to support our community in this fashion,” said Alford. “I think it is important to realize that these veterans and members of Post 828 truly put their heart into their community.”
In reference to COVID-19 restrictions placed upon many businesses and organizations within the city, the post has been closed for two months and will reopen on June 1.
“The health and safety of our members, families, and guests are a high priority,” said Alford. “We will be following the guidelines set forth by the city to ensure social distancing, occupancy percentages are adhered to.”
The post is located at 3415 Martin Luther King Drive and is widely known for its Blues Mondays.
Post membership is open to active-duty and veterans.
